Behind the Scenes: Making Jewellery for Harry Potter – part I

It’s been such a career highlight to design and make several pieces of jewellery for the Harry Potter films – I therefore don’t mind at all when people refer to me as ‘the Harry Potter jeweller’!

Back in 2006, when I was heavily pregnant with my son, I was commissioned to make a pair of earrings for actress Evanna Lynch, who plays young witch Luna Lovegood, to wear in the 2007 film Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I was told that the young actress enjoyed making her own jewellery using the French beading technique and was asked to make her some French-beaded radish earrings. In J. K. Rowling’s The Order of the Phoenix novel she describes the new student at Hogwarts, the ‘odd’ witch Luna Lovegood, as wearing radish earrings.

I had to teach myself French beading but I always love a challenge so I tracked down a book and set to work! Evanna Lynch went on to wear the earrings in the next two films – The Half-Blood Prince and The Deathly Hallows.

The earrings were tricky to make so it’s really satisfying to see the results on the big screen. You can find out more about the jewellery I made for the Harry Potter films here.
