Dragonfly Inspiration and Jewellery

Dragonflies

Dragonflies are insects in the sub-order Anisoptera meaning “unequal-winged”. The term ‘dragonflies’ is sometimes used for the whole scientific order Odonata that also includes the sub-order Zygoptera (damselflies).

With up to a 97% hunting success rate, dragonflies are one of the top predators on Earth.

Dragonflies are more than just an insect that can fly backwards. They are an important factor in habitats and ecosystems. Worldwide, there are approximately 6,500 different species of dragonflies.

Dragonfly eyes – why are they so special?

Sight is an important sense for dragonflies. They can’t hear and have a limited sense of smell, so their eyes are vital for navigating the world.

Dragonfly habitat

Dragonflies live on every continent except Antarctica since it’s far too cold for them to survive there. You are able to find them wherever there is clean, fresh water. Dragonflies are typically found near wet habitats like ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, or wetlands.

In the UK, dragonflies are a welcome sign that the warmer months have arrived. From April to October, you’ll spot them busily zipping about over ponds and streams.

If they sit still long enough for you to take a good look, you’ll see a long-bodied insect with four large wings and enormous eyes. They can be quite colourful too, with bold reds and golden hues, to eye-catching, blues and greens.

Dragonfly life cycle

Depending on the species, dragonflies can live for just a few months, or several years. They spend the majority of their life as, nymphs or larvae, that are unable to fly. Dragonfly nymphs typically live underwater, feeding on invertebrates and even tadpoles and small fish.

Once they have taken adult form, dragonflies usually live for just a few months. This gives them enough time to breed and lay eggs. Many adult dragonflies are eaten by birds such as merlins and hobbies. Others will die at the onset of cold weather, in Autumn and Winter.

How fast can a dragonfly fly?

Hawker dragonflies have a maximum speed of almost 30 miles per hour, making them one of the fastest insects in the UK. Dragonflies are agile fliers and can use each of their four wings independently. This allows them to fly forwards, backwards and sideways. They can also hover in mid-air.

Dragonfly books and research

I chanced upon this lovely old book in the Oxfam bookshop, in Chapel Place. It has lovely black and white illustrations of their wings. The patterns on the wings are really wonderful.

I have a collection of old books with fabulous illustrations of insects. This is a beautiful one showing some Dragonflies hanging around  at the edge of a stream.

Dragonfly designs

So I got to work sketching and planning my designs. Here is my Dragonfly sketchbook.

I decided on a Dragonfly bracelet which is very different from bracelets I have made before. The top part of the bracelet is a large Dragonfly and underneath a chain.

Dragonfly Bracelet

Catherine Hills Dragonfly Bracelet

I'm so proud of this unusual design. It sits perfectly on the top of the wrist and has a chain underneath, so it can be adjusted to fit any wrist size. I wanted to capture the fleeting beauty, grace and movement of a dragonfly skimming by, which leaves your eyes wanting more.

The dragonfly motif is carefully sculpted with fine detailing, resting gracefully against the wrist. Here it is  Dragonfly bracelet

A contemporary pair of crawler earrings that sit along the earlobe. Their shape was inspired by the beauty of a dragonfly.

Crawler earrings are very flattering to wear but tricky to get right. It took a while to perfect this design but I love the way the finished earrings look and feel to wear.

They fit perfectly on my ears and I love wearing them. They fit some customers well too, but they are fiddly to put on and some people cannot manage to get them to work. So I advise people to come to my shop, if they are interested in them, so that they can try before they buy! Here they are on my website Dragonfly Crawlers

Dragonflies are a fascinating insect to see in action out in nature. They are a delicate insect but leave a positive imprint on the environment.
