The Most Flattering Statement Earrings

Would you like to find out how to choose a pair of flattering statement earrings? Here, I share tips and ideas for choosing a pair of statement earrings that are sure to transform your outfit and light up the room.

Weigh Up the Options

Catherine Hills Jewellery - Catherine Wheel Cahin Drop Earrings

Often large earrings can be heavy and uncomfortable, so it’s important to think about the weight when choosing a pair of statement earrings. I try to carefully consider weight and comfort in all my designs but an absolute fail safe when it comes to dangly earrings without any ear ache are my Catherine Wheels or Bobbled Pollen Studs with Detachable Chains.

I wanted to create a pair of dangly earrings that were substantial enough to make a statement without being heavy to wear. Both of these finished designs look so glamorous on - but also have a very modern edge. What’s more you can remove the chains so you have two earrings in one. You can wear the studs by themselves then, if you are going out in the evening, you could add the chains to instantly transform your look.

Let There be Light

Catherine Hills Jewellery - Baroque Three Part Studs

One of the reasons statement earrings can be so flattering is that they reflect the light onto the complexion. My Large Baroque Three Part Drop earrings act like mini photographer's reflectors to reflect a soft, flattering light back onto the face.

Size Matters

Choosing a pair of earrings that sit just below the jawline helps to elongate the neck - in the same way that wearing vertical stripes gives the illusion of a longer, leaner silhouette. My Kiss Cross Drop Earrings, with a row of three crosses or kisses, create a long fluid shape that elongates the neck beautifully. I chose a cross motif as it has so many meanings, going back through civilisation. The circular links that connect the three geomtric crossses give the piece a fluid, organic quality.

Create a Talking Point

An unusual pair of statement earrings can make a whole outfit. If you are choosing an unusual design such as my Bird Cage Earrings, then I suggest wearing a plainer top to let the earrings really stand out. Choosing a pair of earrings with a story can be a great choice if you are feeling nervous about an occasion, as they can provide an easy talking point. My Bird Cage Earrings were inspired by the Carol Ann Duffy poem, "Rapture". The tiny song thrush hangs behind chain bars, embellished with small grey pearls.

Express Yourself

There is nothing more flattering than clothes and accessories that make you feel like yourself. In my Tunbridge Wells jewellery shop and atelier, I’ve found that people’s faces instantly relax and smile when they try on a pair of earrings that feel just right. For the bold, my Dragonfly Earrings are a daring new design inspired by the beautiful details and shapes of a dragonfly.

Get It Framed

In the same way that framing a print or sketch makes it feel more special - choosing statement earrings that frame the face instantly makes you feel more finished or polished. My Phish Drop earrings above and Swish Drop earrings below both have a long, elegant, sensual shape that frame the face beautifully.

Add Some Sparkle

In the same way that having sparkling, bright eyes or glossy hair are often seen as a sign of good health - wearing statement earrings that sparkle in the light also sends a positive message and catches the eye. There are lots of gemstones to choose from but they can often be quite heavy in statement earrings so I like to use texture to capture and play with the light. My Double Oval Bobbled Hoop earrings worn by Rosa Hoskins above and Elliptical Hoop Earrings below are both dotted with my signature bobbled texture which almost appears to sparkle in the light.

Striking Stripes

New to my jewellery collection herd: my Zebra Earrings. These unique handcrafted silver statement earrings are unlike anything I’ve ever made (or seen) before.

The inspiration came from the striking shape of zebra heads, which reminded me of tribal masks and bold geometric patterns. As a designer, I love experimenting with texture, contrast, and negative space, and these earrings were the perfect opportunity to explore that.

The finished design is playful yet elegant, with dramatic striped detailing created through careful silver oxidation. Light, comfortable, and full of movement, these earrings are designed to turn heads and spark conversation whenever they’re worn.

Made in my Tunbridge Wells atelier, I hope they’re a perfect example of how artisan silver jewellery can combine storytelling, artistry, and wearable design.

Earrings are an easy way to update your look and can make a statement even if your next catch up is on Zoom. You can shop my collection of statement dangly earrings here or stop by my Tunbridge Wells jewellery shop which is open Thursday to Saturday to discover my collection in person.
